A little bit about us! Baird Banner

In most cases, someone sees a need and starts a newspaper. In this case, the town saw a need and sought a publisher.
In May 1997 Baird town leaders sought out Don Tabor, publisher of the other two Callahan County newspapers, and asked him to start a newspaper in Baird. He agreed and Baird folks went to work.
Before the first issue was even printed, the two women's clubs in town presented Tabor with 400 paid subscriptions.
That initial issue contained all the high school graduates and their pictures.
One of those graduates was Sheri Waldrop Allen. The next week Tabor hired her as a typesetter based on teachers' recommendations. She remains with the newspaper today as managing editor.
Townfolks have embraced the Baird Banner and with the |
paper's philosophy of heavy coverage of local events, especially school news, subscription renewals have remained high. |
Cross Plains Review
The Cross Plains Review has the distinction of being the oldest business institution in the community of Cross Plains and celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2008.
The business moved from the banks of Turkey Creek to its present location in 1908.
The original printing press was installed into the ground and the two-story brick building was constructed around it.
The antique equipment is still housed at the site and was actually used until around 1980.
Don Tabor, present owner and publisher purchased the Cross Plains Review in February 1985 and Vanda Anderson was hired in March 1985 as the editor and remains so today.
The Cross Plains Review continues to be the hometown newspaper for ex-students, many out-of-state and locals who subscribe to the weekly |
edition. It has a rich tradition of honest and dependable fact reporting.
